Since I stopped making care quilts I have not been able do make a dent in my scraps.
I am grand-aunt to two wonderful small ones now, and except for the small quilts for their prams, they have no quilts for play and cuddles yet.
This pile of scraps did make a dent in my older blue fabrics.
I can so remember when these blue colours were in style. Quite different from the Civil War repros and Japanese fabrics I prefer these days ;-)
I know both the children's birthdays and Christmas are quite far away, but I did really feel like some stash busting and fast sewing today.
I can finish the quilt closer to Christmas, folding the top for now.
A friend pointed me in the direction of this quilt on YouTube.
Since working from true scraps and not from Jelly Rolls, it was a lot of cutting involved, and I also choose to divide the longer strips in 2.
It was quite fast and easy after all, even if it took me a few hours - not just 45 minutes, as the video said.
First I joined all the pieces into a 2,5" x 1600" strip!
Yes, you read right - 40 meters / 1600"
Then grab both ends and sew the 2 strips into a 800" (20 meter) strip
Repeat the action of joining ends and double the strips until you have 32 - it goes fast - 2 to 4 to 8 to 16 to 32.
All you need is a pair of scissors to cut the doubled strip at the end.
The quilt now measures 48" x 64" - a good size :-)
I will do the same with red and pink scraps shortly, for the big sister.
The quilt top is not yet ironed, as you might notice.
Isn't it strange how some of the colours seems to come close to each other…….
I promised May Britt to show her my baskets.
I really like this style of baskets - very traditional Norwegian, very well made, very functional and very nice to look at.
The shop next to my favourite quilt shop Lappemakeriet carries these lovely baskets and many more :-)
It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

This is a great way to use your stash. Think I have to make some like this too.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE your baskets!!!!!
Wonderful baskets and a cute little quilt, I'm sure it and it's red and pink version will be appreciated. I just made some of these myself for my nieces who had outgrown their baby quilts and will be giving them to them next month. I hope they love them. I used strips that I cut myself and like you, it wasn't 45 minutes, but still fairly quick.
ReplyDeleteMå prøve den teknikken der en gang - jeg har 'noen' blå stoffer jeg også...
ReplyDeleteFlotte kurver!
What beautiful colors! It's kind of fun to go through scraps and see what you were once really crazy about. Oh how things change!
ReplyDeleteOur guild retreat did this as a race as shown on You tube. I did not participate. It does appear to be a fantastic way to use up leftovers.

ReplyDeleteMorsom måte å lage en topp på. Og deilig å bli kvitt litt lagervare regner jeg med.
ReplyDeleteThis looks very nice and I am sure it becomes a nice quilt.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great to use up your rests? I did the same 3 weeks ago ;)
You can see it on my blog.
Takk for en koselig sy-lunsj.
ReplyDeleteGleder meg alt til neste torsdag...
Og stripe-reste-quilten ble kjempefin..!!.. selv om den er blå.. ;)

I recently made a jelly roll 1600 quilt. And I took me a few hours to make, as well. I'm not sure how the lady in the video finishes hers so fast.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the quilts will be loved by the little ones you are giving them to.
I love those baskets too! That Jelly Roll project looks great. I have made the same quilt myself with others at my quilting group and they all looked fantastic. Some proceeded to cut the quilt up into squares and stitch them together.
ReplyDeleteKjempefint! Jegmvol prøve med mine rester!
